We knew it was coming, just as it does every year, but it always feels a little surprising when we now sit on the verge of tax season. And you know the time has come, because we are all starting to receive the forms we need to finish our return.
But what have you done with them? When it comes to tax returns, people don’t always think about it starting in January, but there’s no reason it can’t. In fact, it should. The more things you have together now, the more you will be able to move on quickly when it is time to go. If you are already one of your clients, you can even save each form into your client folder on TaxDome as you get it. Sometimes people think that you must be fully ready before beginning the prep process, but the more you do along the way, the further down the road you get. That could be extra important this year when there are a lot of questions about new tax provisions passed in the last year. If some of them end up benefiting you, then the sooner you have things in motion, the sooner you will know just how much they will. Possibly more likely, though, is that you aren’t sure how much any of it will affect you at all. See, save those forms now so that we have more chances to get an answer, and get an earlier answer. Also, if you have any definite questions about these new provisions now, this is the best time to start that discussion. Come April, multiple people will be coming around with many questions. But now, the more ahead of things you are, the closer to the front of the line you will be, the sooner you will get your answer. So yes, it is early, but still welcome to tax season!
